What E-Invoicing Means for Retail

Every sale becomes a structured electronic invoice in the PINT AE format. Your POS or accounting system passes it to an Accredited Service Provider, which sends it over the Peppol network and reports it to the Federal Tax Authority. Your till does not connect to FTA servers. A PDF receipt is not an e-invoice.

What Changes:

Every Sale Needs An E-Invoice:

A structured PINT AE file per sale. A printed or emailed PDF does not count.

POS Integration:

Your point-of-sale connects to an Accredited Service Provider, not to the FTA

Return Handling:

Returns need credit note e-invoices linked to original sales

Retail-Specific Challenges

1. High Transaction Volume

Busy retail days mean hundreds of transactions. Your POS must generate e-invoices instantly without slowing checkout.

2. Inventory Management

E-invoices with product variants (sizes, colors) must accurately reflect inventory for proper stock tracking.

3. Returns & Exchanges

Returns require credit notes referencing original invoices. Exchanges need both credit and new sale invoices.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does e-invoicing start for UAE boutiques and retail stores?

It depends on revenue. Below AED 50 million: appoint an Accredited Service Provider by 31 March 2027, go live 1 July 2027. At or above AED 50 million: appoint an ASP by 30 October 2026, go live 1 January 2027. A voluntary pilot opens 1 July 2026. Government entities appoint by 31 March 2027 and go live 1 October 2027.

Does my POS send invoices straight to the FTA?

No. Your POS or accounting system sends the invoice to an Accredited Service Provider, which transmits it over the Peppol network in the PINT AE format. There is no direct connection from your till to FTA servers, and a PDF receipt is not an e-invoice.

What is the penalty for retail e-invoicing non-compliance?

AED 5,000 per month. It is a monthly administrative penalty, not a charge per invoice.

How do I handle returns with e-invoicing?

Returns require credit note e-invoices referencing the original sale. Your system must link the refund to the original invoice for proper VAT tracking.
